The signs and effects of the google core update

The Google Core update has caused the downfall of many websites. Some blogs are dead because of this update. Meanwhile, this same update has led to massive growth on other websites.

I am a victim of the October 2023 core update, which led to the death of one of my websites. In this article, we will look at the signs and effects of the Google Core update, both negative and positive.

What is Google Core update?

Google Core Update is an algorithm by Google that ensures that search results are quality and relevant to the user. Due to this intent, Google downgrades websites that do not provide quality and relevant content to the user but promotes websites that do the right thing.

What I think about the Google Core update

It is obvious that Google wants to prevent search engines from being flooded with AI-generated content that does not meet the searcher’s intent. Google wants content creators to show experience, expertise, authority, and trustworthiness (E-E-A-T).

Google has said that it is not against AI-generated content, but it should be of high quality that meets the E-E-A-T concept.

But the recent updates have killed websites with AI-generated content. Does it mean those AI contents do not have value? Possibly yes.

So what do we do now? I think we should try our best to write human-generated content that provides value. Most bloggers have jumped to AI content because it is easier to do. Although some add some value to these AI contents, others do not add value at all.

From my little experience, as a victim of the October 2023 update, I think Google hates AI-generated content because I never wrote an article generated from AI without adding some value to it.

I think the best thing to do is to write your human content that provides value. Note that human-written content without value is still useless and you may still get hit by the next update. Value in this context means that your articles should provide answers to the user’s questions.

Google has stated emphatically that its algorithm seeks to reward good content.

List Major Google Updates

Google updates come in different forms. Each update has a specific purpose. This is why the release of an update does not affect all websites. Every update is assigned to a certain purpose.

Let’s look at the various forms of the Google update:

1. Reviews Update

This update focuses on evaluating the opinions and reviews by content creators on websites. Google aims to promote reviews that arein-depth rather than thin. This update mostly affects review websites.

The reviews system aims to better reward high quality reviews, which is content that provides insightful analysis and original research and is written by experts or enthusiasts who know the topic well.

2. Google Core Update

This is to ensure that the overall delivery on Google is the best. This is the most powerful of all the updates.

3. Google Spam Update

This is meant to tackle manipulative link-building practices that are used to gain an undeserved advantage in search engine rankings.

4. Google Helpful Content

It seeks to ensure a good user experience. This update rewards websites that prioritize their visitor’s experiences. According to Google, they reward content that provides a good user experience.

You need to consider the following to provide a good user experience:

  • Are Core Web Vitals satisfactory?
  • Is secure page serving ensured?
  • Is the content well-presented on mobile devices?
  • Is there a minimal amount of distracting advertising?
  • Are there no intrusive interstitials?
  • Is navigation to the main content seamless?
  • Is the page design clear in distinguishing the main content?

5. Google Reviews Update

This update is to ensure that creators give out their best knowledge about anything they review on their websites.

6. Product Reviews Update

Product review seeks to reward websites that give detailed analyses or reviews about a product. The creator should have some experience with the product he writes about.

Since prices of products may change with time, it is important to update your content regularly to ensure it is current and provides the best value to your readers. This is what Google wants.

The content about a product should not be thin but in-depth.

Signs and Effects of the Google Core Update

The signs and effects of the google core update

Maybe you have not been hit by the Google Core update before. Let’s look at the signs that show that a website has been hit by an update.

1. Massive decrease in impressions

One sign that shows that a website has been hit by the update is a sudden drop in impressions. This is what happened to one of my websites. The site used to have 350–400 impressions per day. But suddenly, it dropped to below 20 impressions per day. It was a new blog that was growing gradually until the update killed it.

2. Massive decrease in Traffic

This is obvious. If there is a sudden drop in impressions, organic traffic will also drop automatically because it is impressions that lead to traffic. Since my site was new, it was not having much traffic but at least there was some traffic. The update caused the traffic to a halt.

3. Drop in Ranking of Keywords

One of the main motives behind the Google Core updates is to promote quality content and downgrade poor content. So a sudden drop in search ranking is a clearer sign of being affected negatively by the update.

Before the update, I was ranking number 1,2 and 3 for some articles which was giving me a lot of impressions and some clicks. But these positions dropped to 90,70 and 67 respectively as a result of being hit by the update.

The above signs may lead to:

  • Panic

Yes, these signs bring panic especially if you have not been hit before or you don’t have any idea of the Google Core update. In my case, this is exactly what happened. I was panicking, confused, and didn’t know what to do. It caused me to do some alterations on my backend which ended up putting my site health into danger.

It was later, that I got to know that there was something called Google Core update and that is what was causing the sudden changes.

But if you’re reading this blog post, you should understand that the update is now part of us hence, there is no need to panic.

  • Giving up

It is obvious to lose hope in blogging especially if you just started your blog and it gets hit by the update. You may want to quit blogging but that is not a good idea.

I have two solutions for you; either you use data from analytics to figure out which aspect of your website is having problems and try to fix them or you have to create a new blog and implement the right procedures on it.

This is how this blog started. I started this blog to implement the right methods acceptable by Google thus the E-E-A-T. On this blog, I try to do things better than that of my previous site.

How long does it take to recover from a core update?

Although, I said earlier that using data from your website analytics can help you recover, google has stated and made it clear that pages that were affected as a result of the update might not recover.

This is what Google said;

Content that was impacted in Search or Discover by one might not recover—assuming improvements have been made—until the next broad core update is released.

Google went on to say that, though the recovery is not guaranteed, a page may be restored on the next update if there are improvements.

However, we’re constantly making updates to our search algorithms, including smaller core updates. We don’t announce all of these because they’re generally not widely noticeable. Still, when released, they can cause content to recover if improvements warrant

To conclude, I can say that there is no guaranteed time for recovery. Your site pages may or may not recover.

How to avoid the negative impact of the Google Core update

The impact of the update is very sad as we have discussed earlier. Hence, it is important to do the right thing to avoid these possible impacts.

  • Publish the best possible content
  • Employ EEAT
  • Write for humans, not search engines: This is a serious point; some content creators only write to rank on search engines while disregarding the needs of the searcher.

When your content is good you will not be affected by the update rather you will maintain your position or be promoted.

We suggest focusing on ensuring you’re offering the best content you can. That’s what our algorithms seek to reward.

Conclusion

Some signs and effects of the Google Core update include a decrease in traffic, impressions, and clicks. Being hit by the update is very sad. Hence, it is important to ensure that the right thing is done.

Writing high-quality content, writing for humans, not search engines, focusing on quality before SEO, and providing a good page experience can help you skip the hard hit of Google Core updates.

As I said earlier, I am a victim of the October 2023 core update, which led to the death of one of my websites, and based on my experience from the mistakes I made, I would advise you to follow all the tips in this article to prevent a future impact.

Let me know your side about how the update affected you and what you are doing to recover.
